Why E-Motos Are Taking Over This Year

Electric motorcycles may not yet match traditional combustion bikes in terms of raw speed, horsepower, or long-distance range. Still, they’re carving out a space of their own—and doing it fast. With each new release, e-motos bring meaningful advantages that continue to improve year after year.

Will electric motorcycles ever completely replace gas-powered bikes? I touch on that question at the end of my video covering the top five e-motos launched this year. The short answer: probably not. That said, the future of motorcycling won’t be decided by longtime riders alone—it will be shaped by the next generation.

More and more young riders, along with adults who are brand-new to motorcycling, are discovering two wheels through small, lightweight electric bikes. These machines lower the barrier to entry and make riding feel approachable, fun, and unintimidating.

At their core, e-motos are about the pure joy of riding. And as someone who’s been on motorcycles my entire life, I can honestly say they deliver just as much enjoyment as their combustion-powered counterparts.

Coming in at number one is the E Ride Pro SS. The sub-$5,000 e-moto segment is absolutely packed right now, with new models popping up so often it’s hard to track them all.

Almost every week, another electric bike shows up claiming to be the “Surron killer.” Most of the time, that promise doesn’t hold up. When the E Ride Pro made the same claim, I was skeptical too.

But once I actually got on the bike, that skepticism disappeared fast. The power delivery is seriously impressive—12 kilowatts from a 72-volt, 40-amp battery and power system is no joke.

To put that into perspective, the Surron Light Bee tops out at around 6 kilowatts of peak power with a maximum speed of about 45 mph. The E Ride Pro SS pushes things much further, hitting 60 mph and delivering double the peak power.

If Surron and Talaria want to stay competitive, they’re going to need to step things up to match what the E Ride Pro SS brings to the table.

Staying with Surron, the number two spot goes to the Surron Ultra Bee (yes, I know—hear me out).

If you can put in a bit of extra overtime and have some additional budget to work with—roughly in the $7,000 to $8,000 range—the Ultra Bee would be my choice.

It sits right in the sweet spot between full-size electric dirt bikes and the lighter, sub-$5,000 models, offering a balance of performance and manageability.

The Ultra Bee comes equipped with a 74-volt, 55-amp battery, delivers a top speed of 56 mph, and boasts a claimed peak output of around 12.5 kilowatts.

If you’re looking for a reasonably priced electric street bike, the Ryvid Anthem is hard to beat. That said, it’s worth setting expectations upfront—I managed about 28 miles of range during a relaxed, everyday ride. Battery technology still has some catching up to do when it comes to delivering long range at an affordable price.

The Anthem isn’t built for freeway runs or long-distance touring. Instead, it shines as a city bike, perfect for cruising around town or commuting to and from work. One standout advantage, though, is charging speed—it’s easily one of the quickest-charging electric motorcycles I’ve ridden.

The Ryvid Anthem runs on a 72-volt battery and produces roughly 14 kilowatts of peak power.

Top speed comes in at just over 75 mph, and in my experience, it can comfortably maintain highway speeds until the battery drops to around 35%, which is genuinely impressive for a bike in this class.
